Now that fall is in full swing and the temperatures are dropping, it is time to start making preparations for the winter months. Climate control is critical; therefore, it is imperative that you work on getting your furnace ready.

You must take the steps necessary to ensure your furnace is fully operational, operates in a safe manner, and is as energy-efficient as possible.

Failure to do so could result in numerous complications when you start your furnace for the first time when that first cold morning, day, or night occurs. Continue reading to learn a few strategies to help you achieve success in this endeavor.

Strategy #1: Change the Furnace Filter

Inside your furnace is a specially designed filter. It helps to protect the blower fan of the system from dirt, dust, and other types of debris. Additionally, it helps to ensure that the air quality inside of your home is high.

Determine where your furnace filter is located and inspect it for the size, type, and MERV rating.

Once you have this information documented, purchase a new filter in the unit. When you return, make certain that you follow the instructions on inserting the new filter appropriately.

Strategy #2: Clean Out the Heat Exchanger

When the power is completely cut off from your furnace, you should clean out the heat exchanger unit.

This may be performed by using either an appropriately-sized and designed brush or by using a vacuum cleaner.

While performing this step, be sure to observe the area for any cracks, holes, or other types of damage that could result in the interior of your home being exposed to potentially dangerous carbon monoxide levels.

If you find that you are not comfortable with this task, a heating specialist or technician will be able to do the job for you.

Strategy #3: Test the Igniter

Depending on the type of furnace that you own, you could have a standard pilot or you could have an electronic-based igniter. It is important to determine which type you have and then engage in the process of testing it.

First, locate the button designed to reset the igniter and press it. If this fails, inspect the breaker that is attached to your furnace.

If the test fails, you will need to enlist the assistance of a heating professional. Failure to do so could not only result in damage to your system but potential dangers arising in your home.

Strategy #4: Inspect the Blower Motor

Read the manual to obtain information about the blower motor of your system. This should tell you whether or not it is the type that requires any type of lubrication and how to access the unit so that it can be thoroughly cleaned.

In most instances, you should open up the unit and make certain that all pieces are free from debris. If any type of debris is present, simply clean it off.

Once that is done, you may lubricate the interior bearings – but only if your particular system calls for it.

You will need to take off the caps you see in order to perform this step. Remember, this step may not apply to your system. This is why you must review the manufacturer’s paperwork first.

Strategy #5: Inspect Air Elimination Unit and the Carbon Monoxide Detectors Within Your Home

In most cases, the chimney will serve an air elimination unit. This should be cleaned thoroughly. Because of the nature of the job, most will need a professional to perform this task to ensure the safe usage of the furnace.

Inside of the home, you should have strategically placed carbon monoxide detectors. It is absolutely vital that you test each and every single one. If the system emits carbon dioxide into your home, it could be deadly.
