Process piping is a specialized piping system that is designed to convert various types of fuels, liquids, chemicals, gases, and similar types of materials into a product that is considered to be usable within a given industry.

Process piping is commonly utilized in industrial settings.

The determination as to whether or not a pipe is considered to be process piping is based on the equipment that is attached to the end of the piping material.

If the pipe is connected to a faucet, for example, it is considered to be plumbing piping; however, if it is connected to a machine or equipment utilized for processing within a factory or other industrial setting, it would be distinguished as “process piping”.

The Process Piping System and Its Purpose

In most instances, the process piping systems in place at various factories and/or industrial facilities are directly responsible for the carrying and transportation of a material other than standard water.

If the substance that flows through a pipe is used for a very specific type of process that is not directly related to the distribution of water within the facility, it is considered to be process piping.

This is governed by a code that relates to the engineering field. If the piping transports water for distribution, this is considered to be a plumbing pipe and it is governed by a code that falls under the plumbing field.

Components

Process piping may include a wide variety of components. This include a variety of piping systems that interconnect and include the following:

  • Pipes
  • Strainers
  • Tubing
  • Gaskets
  • Pressure Hoses
  • Fittings
  • Valves
  • Flanges
  • Traps
  • Switches
  • Separators
